Eric Adams should cut money from the NYPD and give it to the libraries.
In further evidence of Mayor Eric Adams’s absolutely disastrous run as mayor of New York City, it was announced yesterday that the New York Public Library system will see widespread Sunday closures of many branches as a resulting of a 5 percent budget cut (amounting to almost $40 million).
This is truly terrible and misguided. Full stop.
Budget will also be cut for library materials (books!) and general maintenance.
Just by way of comparison, the NYPD’s annual operating budget is $11 billion, with a B. Some might say that’s apples-to-oranges, but I prefer to call it books-to-guns.
And as most of you reading this know, libraries are about so much more than books, and the summary shuttering of so much public space in New York will only make daily life that much harder for the majority of its citizens.
